Our Story
Founded in 2013, Seven Mile originated as a music enrichment program for students in Detroit. That year, the city had been forced to declare bankruptcy, resulting in harsh budget cuts to music and art programs across Detroit public schools. Sam Saunders, a University of Michigan alum and current pianist, created the organization with the belief that every student should have access to music exposure.
Now, with many schools in Detroit being able to allocate more funds to the arts, Seven Mile works closely with several community partners to provide additional music, art, and coding enrichment to students outside of school.

So what do we actually do?
U of M students in Seven Mile take weekly trips to our community centers in Detroit, where we run lessons in music, art and writing, and coding. These lessons are planned by students on our executive board and emphasize exposure, experimentation, and fun.
At the end of each semester, we have a showcase event to let the students show off all of the amazing work they did for the past few months to their peers, family, and community members. |
